Adult and child playing together in a long grassy field

Why does natural connection create more meaningful portraits?

Why natural, connection creates more meaningful portraits than stiff, posed smiles. A Geelong family photographer’s perspective.

If you’ve ever been in front of a camera, you’ve probably done it automatically.

You see the lens.
You straighten up.
You freeze.
You look straight down the barrel.

And you smile.

It’s what we’ve been trained to do since we were children.

But here’s the thing…

That’s not what I’m looking for.

The Problem With “Cheese”

When you look directly at the camera, you become aware of being watched.

Your shoulders stiffen.
Your smile changes.
You start performing.

And suddenly, the moment isn’t real anymore.

As a fine art family photographer in Geelong, I’m not interested in performance. I’m interested in connection.

What I’m Actually Watching For

I’m watching for:

  • The way your toddler reaches for your face

  • The way your partner instinctively pulls you closer

  • The way your child looks at you when they feel safe

  • The soft brush of hair being tucked behind an ear

Those are the moments that feel timeless.

Those are the moments that belong on your walls.

Pretend I’m Not There

99% of the time, I want you to forget I exist.

I’ll guide you gently usually with a silly prompt or two

I’ll prompt you into movement, into laughter, into closeness.

But I don’t want you standing there looking at me wondering what to do with your hands.

I want you with your people.

Because when you stop focusing on the camera, something shifts.

Your body relaxes.
Your expression softens.
Your connection deepens.

And that’s when the image becomes art.

But What If I Want One Looking at the Camera?

Of course we can do one.

There’s nothing wrong with a beautiful, direct portrait. Sometimes eye contact can feel powerful and intentional.

But the images that make it onto walls — the ones that stop you in your tracks — are usually the in-between ones.

The ones where you weren’t thinking about how you looked.

You were just there.

Together.

If you’re looking for family photography in Geelong that feels natural, emotive and connection-driven — not stiff or forced — I’d love to create something for you.

Let’s design a session that feels like your family.

Not like a performance.
