The problem with Cheese in family portraits
What’s the problem with saying Cheese in family portraits? Recently, I was reflecting on some of the images that didn’t make the final cut… and I realised something.
So many of us are conditioned to look straight down the barrel of a camera.
To pause.
To freeze.
To smile and say “cheese.”
And while that can absolutely work sometimes…
It’s not what I’m usually looking for.
99% of the time, I don’t want you focused on me. I don’t want you aware of the lens. I want you to almost forget I’m there.
Because when you stop performing for the camera
that’s when the magic happens.
That’s when your little one looks up at you the way they really do.
That’s when you brush hair off their face without thinking.
That’s when your partner pulls you in closer, naturally.
I’m not here to have you stand awkwardly and smile at me.
I’m here to gently guide you into connection with your people.
To create images that feel lived-in.
Images that feel like you.
Images that hold the in-between moments not the posed ones.
So next time you’re in front of my camera…
pretend I’m not there.
And just be with them.
